2005 Earthquake: Donations & Supplies

When there is unforeseen destruction and calamity, global communities must come together to provide for those who cannot provide for themselves.

The news of the devastation was met with shock and despair, however, communities across the world didn’t hesitate to provide their help and support. In the Midlands, once the news was released that a team of doctors will be travelling imminently to the affected areas, people began collecting items to send with the team. 128 large cardboard boxes were packed with warm clothes, blankets and medicines and £40,000 cash was donated.

My religion is humanitarianism, which is the basis of every religion in the world.
Abdul Sattar Edhi

The abundance of donations was so pronounced that alternate arrangements had to be made to transport the boxes to Pakistan. Even with the baggage allowance for seven doctors, who were taking minimal luggage themselves, the allowance fell short. Whilst the tickets were paid for by the travellers themselves, Pakistan International Airlines accepted the cargo to be sent free of cost.

Upon arrival, we setup a tent hospital overnight at Balakot and over following six days we distributed the supplies, operated on 138 cases while triaged 1200 patients. With the help of Army helicopters, we transferred severe spinal injury patients to tertiary centres in Islamabad.

Amidst the devastation, if there was a thin thread of silver lining, it was the beauty of global communities coming together, people of all faiths, religions and backgrounds showing compassion and donating as much as possible to a disaster which shook the world.

How can I help Midland Doctors®?

We are always in need of donations to help run our charity hospital in Muzaffarabad whilst also participating in many other charitable projects across the world. Of course, not all contributions are monetary. Your time and effort to help fundraise, manage and drive our organisation forward will always be welcomed and appreciated!
